A
Above the fold
The part of a web page you see before scrolling. It should make clear who you are, what you do, and what to do next, because many visitors decide here whether to stay.
Alt text
A short written description of an image, read by screen readers and used by search engines. Good alt text improves accessibility and helps images show up in search.
Astro
A modern web framework that builds fast, lightweight sites by sending mostly plain HTML to the browser instead of heavy JavaScript. It is the engine Villex Web builds on, which is why our sites load in about a second.
B
Backlink
A link from another website to yours. Search engines treat quality backlinks as votes of confidence, so they are one of the biggest factors in ranking higher.
Bounce rate
The share of visitors who leave after viewing a single page without doing anything. A slow or confusing site raises it; a fast, clear one lowers it.
C
Call to action (CTA)
The specific next step you want a visitor to take, such as "Call now", "Book a consultation", or "Get a free audit". Every page should have a clear one.
CMS
Content management system, the tool used to add and edit the content on a site. WordPress is one example. Villex sites are built so content is easy to edit without a heavy CMS.
Conversion
When a visitor takes the action you want, such as calling, booking, buying, or filling in a form. The whole point of a business website is to increase conversions.
Conversion rate
The percentage of visitors who convert. Improving speed, clarity, and the path to action all raise it, often more cheaply than buying more traffic.
Core Web Vitals
A set of Google measurements for real-world page experience: how fast the main content loads, how quickly the page responds, and how stable the layout is. Passing them helps both users and rankings.
CSS
The code that controls how a web page looks: colors, fonts, spacing, and layout. Clean CSS keeps a site fast and consistent.
D
Domain
Your website address, such as yourbusiness.com. You should always own your domain yourself, never let a vendor register it in their name.
Domain Rating (DR)
A score from 0 to 100, popularized by the SEO tool Ahrefs, that estimates the strength of a site’s backlink profile. Higher DR generally means an easier time ranking. New sites start near 0.
G
Google Business Profile
The free Google listing that shows your business in Maps and local search, with your hours, photos, reviews, and phone number. For local businesses it is often the single most valuable marketing asset.
H
HTML
The basic building-block language of web pages, defining structure and content. Sites that send lean HTML load faster than sites that rely on heavy scripts.
HTTPS
The secure version of the web protocol, shown by the padlock in the browser. It encrypts data between visitor and site, and search engines expect it as standard.
I
Indexing
The process by which a search engine reads and stores your pages so they can appear in results. If a page is not indexed, it cannot rank.
J
JavaScript
A programming language that adds interactivity to web pages. Useful in moderation; too much of it is the main reason many sites load slowly.
K
Keyword
A word or phrase people type into search, such as "web design miami". Targeting the right keywords on the right pages is how you get found by people already looking for you.
Keyword difficulty (KD)
An estimate of how hard it is to rank on the first page for a given keyword, usually 0 to 100. Smart SEO targets lower-difficulty, high-intent terms first.
L
Landing page
A focused page built to turn a specific visitor into a specific action, often tied to an ad or campaign. It strips away distractions and drives one clear outcome.
Lead
A potential customer who has shown interest, for example by calling, submitting a form, or booking a consultation. Turning visitors into leads is a website’s core job.
Local SEO
The practice of getting found in searches with local intent, such as "near me" or "in Miami". It centers on your Google Business Profile, reviews, and location-specific pages.
M
Map pack
The block of three local business listings Google shows on a map at the top of local searches. Ranking here drives a large share of calls for local businesses.
Meta description
The short summary of a page that can appear under its title in search results. A clear, compelling one improves the share of searchers who click.
Mobile-first
Designing and building for phones first, because that is where most visitors are. Google also evaluates the mobile version of your site primarily.
N
NAP
Name, address, and phone number. Keeping these consistent everywhere online (your site, Google, directories) strengthens local search rankings.
O
Organic traffic
Visitors who arrive from unpaid search results, as opposed to ads. It is the traffic SEO is designed to grow, and it compounds over time.
P
Page speed
How quickly a page loads and becomes usable. Faster pages keep more visitors, convert better, and tend to rank higher. Villex targets loads of about a second.
R
Responsive design
A site that automatically adapts its layout to any screen size, from phone to desktop, so it looks and works well everywhere.
S
Schema markup
Structured data added to your pages that helps search engines understand your business, so they can show richer results like reviews, hours, and location.
SEO
Search engine optimization, the work of helping your site show up higher in search results for the terms your customers use. It combines technical setup, content, and reputation.
SERP
Search engine results page, the page of results you see after searching. Ranking on the first SERP is the goal, because few people look past it.
Sitemap
A file that lists your pages so search engines can find and index them efficiently. Every Villex site ships with one.
SSL certificate
The credential that enables HTTPS and the padlock in the browser. It is standard, expected, and included on every site we build.
U
UX
User experience, how easy and pleasant a site is to use. Good UX quietly increases conversions by removing friction and confusion.
UI
User interface, the visual design a person interacts with: buttons, menus, forms, and layout. Clean UI supports good UX.
Uptime
The percentage of time a site is online and reachable. Static sites like Villex builds tend to have very high uptime because there is little that can break.
W
Web hosting
The service that stores your site and serves it to visitors. Fast, reliable hosting matters; Villex sites run on fast modern hosting and you keep control of it.
WordPress
The most widely used website platform, powerful and flexible but often slow and maintenance-heavy for small businesses because of plugins. See our Villex Web versus WordPress comparison.
